POBAL Closing

The committee and staff of POBAL regret to inform our membership and the wider community that due to lack of funding, POBAL will be closing our offices on 30th April 2019 and will submit papers for the full dissolution of the organisation once all closing-down requirements have been met. We hope that our websites (www.pobal.org agus www.pobalealain.org) will remain online until March 2020, for downloading of information only. Sadly, POBAL is unable to provide any additional services. After twenty years of working for the Irish speaking community, this has been a difficult decision, taken exactly five years after Foras na Gaeilge’s decision, under direction from government ministers at Stormont and Leinster House, to end funding to all the organisations based in the six counties previously in receipt of core funding, in favour of six Dublin-centric organisations. Since this time, POBAL, with only one part-time staff member instead of six full-time workers, has continued to undertake a comprehensive and challenging work programme with a small Capacity Building grant from Belfast City Council and drawing on organisational reserves to cover all other costs. We have maintained a high profile, particularly in relation to the Irish Language Act, a campaign which we initiated and have spearheaded since 2004. We have also carried out ground breaking research projects, reported to the Council of Europe, influencing the implementation of international instruments such as the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, and continued to advise and support the Irish speaking community according to their needs and aspirations. We should like to thank all those who have supported us over the last twenty years and we send best wishes for the future to all our members.
