Irish Setter Shedding

English Setter Shedding
-
I have an Irish Setter. They do shed, but not as much as many breeds. If you keep them well groomed you will notice fairly minimal shedding. I allow my dogs to sleep in the bed. That seems to be the place I find the hair. I wake up on occasion and have to pull a 12″ long, red hair out of my goatee.
Shedding is your last concern with this breed. I’ve volunteered for Irish Setter rescue for many years and between rescue and living with this breed, I urge you to think long and hard before getting one. They are lovely dogs and make great companions. But they are slow to mature and tend to get stuck in that puppy stage for several years. You have to have a very good sense of humor to live with this breed. They are goofy with exuberance. They do exceed in obedience, but they are a dog that will easily get bored with repetition. I can honestly say that because of their exercise requirements it is not a breed for anyone expecting a calm dog without working to keep the dogs physically and mentally satisfied. My girl is 7 years old and can do a nightly three mile jog like it is a walk around the block. Many lovely dogs do come into rescue that are older and need less exercise. Please don’t get an Irish based on looks alone. Really research the breed first… know what you are getting into. Feel free to email me, I have contacts to breeders and rescues in most of the states.

do irish setters shed?

All dogs shed…. Some more than others and Irish setters fall into the MORE category… Of course, if you brush and groom them regularly it’s not really a problem.

of course they do silly all doggies shed (just some more than others) so irish setters do shed and alot cause they have such long hair so yeah THEY shed

Yes! Quite a bit. But they are so pretty and sweet that they are worth a little brushing of your pants! There are only a few breeds of non-shedding dogs and they are usually smaller ones. You could try a labradoodle (Lab and Poodle mix). They don’t shed.
